As swimmers enjoyed a summer swim yesterday morning along the shores of North Beach, tragedy struck off the coastline when a diver’s body was found near Centaur Reef.

The man, aged in his 50s, was with another diver when he failed to resurface at their 4.5 metre boat about 9am.

The duo were just south of the popular reef, located about 3.7km off the beach.

Department of Transport, Marine Rescue Western Australia and water police launched a joint-marine search in the area and by 11.15am his body was found roughly a kilometre off City Beach.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.

WA Police couldn’t reveal how the men were known to each other, where they were from, if they were experienced divers or any circumstances surrounding the man’s death.

“All we’ve got here is all that’s going to be provided,” a WA Police spokeswoman said.

“It’s a matter for the coroner now.”

The Bureau of Meteorology issued a strong wind warning for the Perth, Gascoyne and Bunbury Geographe coastlines on Monday afternoon through to midnight on Christmas Eve.
