DiveRite TransPac vs. OMS IQ? Very similar rigs, I've seen the DR in person and the OMS online and the OMS *seems* better constructed. What is the board's take?

BTW I'm not going to a BP with a harness.....becuase I'm not allowed to dive with a harness...or a hogarthian reg setup in front of students. I also need a setup that can do singles and doubles. Much thanks.

I was hoping that someone would have an opinion and a comparison of the two.

You'll find militant adherents for each harness. They're both good. I have a variant - the Abyss rig. My wife absolutely loves hers. I like it and use mine for travel without a backplate, but I use a plain old backplate for everyday diving, although I did swap out her yellow powder-coated Abyss plate for my boring old Dive Rite.

I have a TransPac wiht a Rec-Wing and very happy with it, haven't seen the OMS setup but it's in the same category from what I understand.

The only problem I had was getting used to the Rec-Wing, since it's designed to be used with 2-tanks, my single tank setup causes air to fill one side of the wing and I was fighting to stay straight durring my dive.....I later figured it out and now I tilt myself to move air from one side of the wing to the other when needed.

My next move is into a DrySuit and a BP/Harness maybe 2 tanks.......not sure on the 2 tank setup.

I have a TransPac with a Trec wing (I only dive singles) and I love it. It is very comfortable, easy to pack and works fine for diving in warm water with a 3-mil shorty or diving in cool New England summer water in a 7-mil full suit with hood. I have the 32-pound weight pockets and I like them also. I have not seen the OMS so I can't comment on it.

I've owned an IQ Pack, which I found very study and well built, though not as secure as a standard bp/harness. The "No-Sag" weight pockets are to be avoided - despite their name, they sag and move around quite a bit.

If anyone is considering either an IQ or TransPac, they should take a serious look at the OMS Comfort Harness and the Dive Rite TransPlate harness, both of which attach directly to a backplate and provide a more secure fit.

I have a Trans-Pac with an Oxycheq wing and like it. Seems stable, like the crotch strap, plenty of D-rings standard with the option of adding more. I have the Transweight system, but haven't used it yet (extra weight only for drysuit diving, I'm too lazy to dive dry these days). Can't comment on the IQ pac, sorry.

Edit: What about the OMS seems better constructed? I've never seen one in person.

Hi have the OMS back plate (stainless) and Halcyon 65lb wings (i think) and it works fine. I have been using it with twin 120's for years. All of the systems, OMS ,DR and Halcyon with fit your needs. You are going to get a lot of resopnce, probably all positve for each mfg. My only suggestion to you is the un-bungied wings. I dove with the OMS 100lb wings for years, I switched to the Halcyon un-bungied wings, I could not beleve the amoount of drag the OMS wings had. I wish I hasd switched much sooner.

hope this helps

I would love to just get a "full" BP/W setup....but as stupid as this sounds....I need something that looks "more like" a regular BC. So any of these rigs are going to be a comprimise, unfortunatly.

I got DR gear and OMS gear, and generaly speaking, OMS has better materials and quality than DR.

Don't get me wrong, DR has high quality excellent gear and it will serve the purpose with excellence, but in my opinion, OMS went the extra mile in quality and attention to detail.
