Diver feared drowned - Latest - New Straits Times
LUMUT: A diver is feared drowned after he failed to emerge from the water during an under water inspection, off Pulau Pangkor here on Thursday.
Elias Mohd Yusup, 32, a former navy personnel was conducting checks on the stern gate of the ex Sri Inderapura vessel with his friend at the time of the incident.
Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency, Maritime District 3, acting operations director, Lt Commander Mahkos anak Juing said the search and rescue operations was started at 2.45 pm with the help of the Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN), Marine Police, Search and Rescue Department and Civil Defence Department.
Elias was working with a company hired by RMN to carry out inspections to dismantle the ship which was half sunk.
"The victim's friend realised he disappeared when he failed to emerge after 10 minutes.
"The friend than lodged a report and a search and rescue mission was launched," he said, adding that the search mission started at 2.45pm (Thursday).
KD Sri Inderapura, an RMN logistics vessel, had been decommissioned following a fire onboard the ship in October 2009.
