Just heard from a friend that they found a diver's body in RI yesterday. Found this on ProJo...

This is the 2nd or 3rd diver to perish in RI this year. It's getting to be a pretty dangerous place, considering the state's small size. My thoughts are with his family & friends...

Body of scuba diver found off Westerly

09:29 AM EDT on Thursday, September 18, 2003

Divers last night located the body of a scuba diver at the east end of Sandy Point in Westerly, police said. The man had been reported missing earlier in the evening by a scuba-diving partner.

"He was found in what appears to be eight feet of water -- no rocks, no debris. He was found on the bottom of the bay floor," said Westerly police Capt. Edward Mello.

The man appeared to be about 50 years old, Mello said. Police had not yet determined where the diver was from.

The Stonington, Conn., police received a 911 call at 6:45 p.m. "from a man who said his dive buddy had not surfaced," Mello said.

Westerly police and rescue, Stonington police and the U.S. Coast Guard responded and began a search that included the beach area around Napatree Point.

Divers from Westerly rescue and the Richmond-Carolina Fire Department found the body at about 9 p.m. The man was still attached to an air tank, Mello said.

The body was brought to a local marina in Westerly, and from there was being taken to the Rhode Island state medical examiner's office in Providence.

Mello said Westerly detectives and Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management officers are conducting an investigation. He said the death did not appear suspicious.
