Travis country sheriff's officials say a scuba diver is dead after a dive in the lake. Authorities say the man's body was pulled from the water Saturday afternoon at Windy Point Park.

"His air tank still had one-thousand pounds of air in it, so obviously he didn't run out of air,” said Paul Brown, volunteer rescue diver.

Brown was just finishing his dive at Windy Point Park in Lake Travis Saturday afternoon when he heard calls for help. Brown says he turned to find a scuba master swimming to the shore with another diver in tow.

"One of the instructors from Corpus surfaced and yelled out that he needed an ambulance and he had the diver in tow. So we pulled him on up, helped him get him out of the water and removed his equipment. Wasn't looking too good, froth out of the mouth and all," said Brown.

Travis county sheriff's officials say the man was diving with a three buddy team when his partners say he began acting erratically and then disappeared in the water. His diving partners say they immediately began searching...but the crew was down about 85 feet where it's dark and hard to see more than ten feet in front of you.

"Lake Travis is not a clear water lake, it is some-what murky and visibility is limited," said Roger Wade of the Travis County Sheriff’s Office.

"From what I've heard he'd been in the water for 30-40 minutes until they found him, that's not usually a good sign," said Brown.

Sherriff’s officials say the man in his mid-50’s died at Brackenridge hospital less than an hour after nearby divers found him and pulled him from the water.
Even though the man was pulled from the waters here at Windy Point sheriff’s officials are not saying his cause of death was a drowning, they say while he was diving he may have suffered cardiac arrest.

"The EMS is calling it a medical incident, we'll have to wait for the medical examiner to complete its investigation before we say anything further," said Wade.
Sheriff's officials say they are still investigating the accident and have not yet released the victim’s name. They have not said whether or not the man was out diving for leisure or if he was in training. This is the third reported death at Lake Travis for 2007.

Theres already another thred going on this, and the battle has begun, sad to say

A sad situation. Even though it may have been natural causes, I think the instructor is likely done with their teaching career.

Hard to say without ALL the details.

Comments like your's certainly do not help the guy/gal in question....

:shakehead:

How do you know there was an instructor involved?

The report simply said:"They [Sheriff's dpmt] have not said whether or not the man was out diving for leisure or if he was in training."

Not doubting you but a link would be appreciated when you make such a point.

he knows because being from austin we have heardva bit more than just what the report says ... and so i agree with mack from the information i have heard (some of it first hand, since i was out at barstow's/ windy point this morning)

all that said though i am interested in how the investigation of this turns out

read the link above to other Windy Point thread. A diver in that guys class posted and then retracted all of her posts. Some of them remain in the form of quotes.

Here is the jist of it from the other thread with the link provided above:

AOW class goes to Windy Point
Dead guy is booted from the class, but for some reason is still diving with the class.
Two students go off to survey a wreck.
Dead guy and instructor are diving together
Instructor or dead guy give up sign
They start to go up
Line is crowded supposedly
Instructor looks up for a few seconds
Dead guy is missing
Instructor surfaces
Dead guy still down
Other students surface
Instructor sends them back down
Students don't find him
After some passage of time students go shore and look for guy--even check the picnic tables and potties--this according to student Debbie who deleted her posts
At some point the instructor calls for help from several rescue classes
Guy is found shortly after rescue classes swing into action
First responders swing into action and effort is reported to be impressive;
Detective interviews students and instructor
Students and instructor according to students deleted post decide they did everything prefect and student want to continue her training to teach others the correct way, proclaims that life is great and her instructor is the best ever--some note after that post that it is a really odd post since a guy just died from their class.
Student says that they think it was a heart attack and should know autopsy results by Tuesday
Within hours of his death, student posts that her instructor has told her that he died from a heart attack. Several people question that information and student gets defensive and cite HIPPA laws.
She keeps saying the instructor did nothing wrong
Some cite the length of time before he called for help and letting someone booted from the class to dive along with the class.
Some people tell her to stop posting that she is probably not helping out her instructor buddy who she keeps praising.
She retracts posts.

That is the basics of the other thread as I remember them. Others can correct me where I am wrong.
