Also saw this on the Daily Mail:

Open wide: The diver who nearly got swallowed by a whaleshark | Mail Online

My take: exaggerated, indeed. But the pictures are impressive.

The photographer's web site (Mauricio Handler Underwater Photographer in New England. Underwater Photography Workshops and Expeditions.) has a few more images (click on Expedition images, whale sharks). Seems these images were during a whale shark expedition. Based on the Web site, he has another expedition in August 2012.

When I went to Isla Mujeres for the whale sharks the water was an opaque green.

But Yahoo has 6 pictures in clear water of a diver there almost swallowed by a whale shark.

I do not know how to post the photos but the web address is:
Whale Shark Swim Photos | Whale Shark Swim Pictures - Yahoo! News

The water really can be that clear in Isla Mujeres - perhaps when you went it was a murky day. AS far as the diver almost being swallowed - no way. He is far away from the shark - that is why he looks so small. The photographer simply had a great perspective.

To the guy that said this photo wasn't possible because there is no diving with Whale SHarks here - true - no diving, this "diver" is free diving and has a camera in his hands - this is actually allowed and is a common activity this time of year.

The whalesharks can be found in either the blue water or the greener water. They move , and sometimes you won't find them in the clear blue so the boat will have to travel a bit to the more enriched green water.... I took these last week and did see them in the blue.
