Aquarius Dive Shop (2040 Del Monte Ave., Monterey) needs some contract divemasters or instructors who can guide visiting divers on escorted dives in the Monterey area.

Requirements: Must be divemaster or instructor with recognized training agency and have in-water liability insurance. We will require that you add Aquarius Dive Shop, LLC as an "additional insured" on your policy. Must be experienced California diver who is familiar with a variety of Monterey area dive sites. Must have good communication skills and be able to demonstrate patience, concern, and be supportive of beginning divers. Must be personally committed to safe diving practices and be an outstanding role model for new divers.

The Role: We get frequent requests for a divemaster/instructor to lead a group of 1-4 divers on guided dives. Often the people who request this have never dived in cold water before and have only limited diving experience in tropical waters. They often have no concept of how to make shore entries or exits and have extremely limited buoyancy control skills. Despite that, they are paying for the services of a professional who can show them "adventure". Thus people who are successful in this business recognize that they are not really in the dive business; they are in the entertainment business, and diving is just the vehicle for providing that entertainment. If you can't make Breakwater on a really crappy day sound like the most exciting thing you've done all week, then please don't bother talking to me.

Despite the above caveats, some of the people who come to us are very good divers who are quite capable at handling themselves in the water. They just have limited time and want the services of a professional to lead them to the most interesting spots in order that they not waste time in hit-or-miss efforts on their own. The truth is that you never know what you're going to get, and you have to be prepared for anything.

When I get a call asking for a divemaster/instructor to lead a dive, I immediately get on the telephone or send out email to the contract divemasters working with me. I prefer to do it via email, but what is important is that I get back a yea or nay answer quickly. After we set the tour up, you will be expected to be here as agreed to take the customers out. Last-minute excuses of why you can't make it are not well received. You must provide your own equipment, though I'll gladly supply air fills. After the dives are over, you'll get paid by check and we will report it to the IRS at the end of the year via 1099.

If this sounds interesting to you, please stop by to talk with me about it. We are especially interested in people who can take tours on week days. I've recently lost three of my most dependable people, in one case to a job move to Texas, in another to a full-time job at Google, and in the third case to a full-time job at the Monterey Aquarium. So now I need more people on my contact list! As part of the interview process, you will go on a [unpaid] dive with me. So don't be surprised when I ask you to show you really do know how to dive. Sorry to say, I've seen plenty of people rated DM who were totally inept and unsafe. When I trust my customers to you, I want to be confident you know what you're doing.

Hope you find someone, Bruce. I've sent my buddy a text and told him to come check out this thread. He's a DM candidate, almost done, and I think he'd be great at it.

Google just takes over everything! Good luck on your search Bruce.
