I was wondering if anyone can give me info on what the requirements are for the pool portion (doing laps in a specific time with and without mask and snorkel) of the DivCon course.
I've only found info on the PADI divemaster and was hoping someone had the DiveCon info.

Thanks in advance.

BTW...can anyone give any advice on problems to look out for.

But, I did have to sit in on about five pool classes (not sessions, full CLASSES). I may have done them when I was doing my Stress and Rescue refresher and pool work with the classes and the LDS staff simply checked them off.

My biggest problem was finding OW classes to assist with. If you want, I will lookup the standards for you in my DiveCon Manual. But, most of it for me was common sense practical teaching experience under competent instructors. It took me in the neighborhood of seven months from start to finish.

My best advice: be patient and have near perfect buoyancy so that you can demonstrate pool skills. It is a different mindset going from "simple diver" to "diving for other divers" and it takes time to settle in.

PM me if you have any questions that you don't wish to ask in the open.

Well, the SSI standards say to complete a "watermanship evaluation". This consists of a 200 yard swim, or 300 yard swim with mask, snorkel and fins, and a ten minute survival swim/float without the use of mask snorkel or fins, or any other swimming aids.

I did these while assisting with the first couple of classes. The DCSI just never brought it up and we had to do the same for our OW class anyways.

There were other things that the LDS owner wanted to stress more like bouyancy control, bouyancy control and more bouyancy control. It would not do for the DiveCons to have poor bouyancy control with students and embarass the shop.

The DCSI also wanted to push insurance/legal issues with being a divecon and instructional techniques. As I said, once the "watermanship skills" were out of the way, they were checked off and never mentioned again.

Is there a time limit for these?

Thanks for all the replies!!!

No time limit for the swim, you just cant stop...

If I am not mistaken, for Dive Con it is a 400 yard swim with no time limit assigned by SSI. Some instructors and/or shops will assign a time limit to it. The snorkle is 800 yards. Same deal with time. 10 minutes tread/float with the last couple of minutes your hands out of the water.

As far as time limits being assigned to the swims, SSI will say there are none but talk to the instructor about it. Find out from the instructor who will be doing the course. They cannot soften the standards but I believe they can stiffen them, up to a point.

Well, the exact SSI standards are what I posted. I am a DCSI. If the instructor wants to add more to the swim, then they can.
