molksmith:Well if you don't have the computer and your doing multiple dives the wheel is the next best thing. And the wheel doesn't use a battery. BTW/ Interesting story about the creation of it. Seems PADI thought the same thing about it as SSI in the beginning.
It's handy and 50 Bucks is cheaper than Decompression Treatment.
When I decided to do OW, I started looking for course materials before I had decided on a DS other than to realize that PADI was about the only game in town.
I picked up my OW classroom materials with the Wheel for $29 on ebay. Granted the materials were the previous version, but if you are looking to do OW and want the Wheel, there are deals out there.
I learned to do the tables when I took Nitrox, and compared the results. WOW, the tables REALLY kill the bottom time with all that rounding. If you do a couple dives, and round up to ten feet vs. five on the wheel, the BT difference can be 30 minutes or more.
Add Enriched air to the mix, and often the BT differences were well over an hour after two dives.
IMO, the wheel is just as easy to use as the table, however if the individual has problems with the RDP (and I've seen some that do) than IMO the wheel is going to be difficult.
