Have an interesting question:

Are you a new diver?

If so, why did your PADI facility sell you a wheel when they are not intended for new divers/basic OW courses?

I thought he said he was using the table and not the wheel. And who says you can't teach the wheel in OW?

Cute program :)
LOVE the warning that pops up after i select my table style, hehe.
It would be quite handy to have the full version, so I think ill be sending a message to scubatoys :)

The wheel is actively encouraged for PADI Open Water divers! :-)

Some of the best study tools for the RDP Table and wheel versions are the instructions for use booklets that come with them. Lots of excellent step-by-step advice, sample problems and pictures. I've not played with any of the software above so can't comment on them but I've always found the study tools very useful.

Cheers

I am using the table I had said it wasn't the wheel. Sorry if I was confusing :D

Tables can be a bit confusing if you're not proficient with them or haven't used them in a while. By all means ask an instructor, Divemster, or someone else you are diving with for help. Don't assume that you are the only person who has trouble with them. My dive buddy was having problems with the repetitive dives and the Equivalent Air Table while diving Nitrox last year. I would be more than willing to help anyone who's diving around me if they asked me and many others on the board would do the same. Now that almost everyones using dive computers many lack confidence and skill with dive tables.

I just ran through some different exersices with the nice little program from scubatoys and found that i still remember how to use the tables. Lucky me.
Of course, provided I could give the ones asking the correct answer, I wouldnt hesitate helping out either. However, I wouldnt take on that task over the internet..

Trust me, using the wheel is a great tool. It's not as conservative as the table due to deeper time/depth breakdowns so you get more accurate/longer bottom times and different residual nitrogen numbers. Granted, the residual times are only off by a little, but a little is all it takes to change pressure groups on the wheel.

I'm not saying the wheel can not be taught, only that the table is used so widely (possibly RSTC standard as well) so it should be taught first and the wheel afterwards. Same reason I do not allow computer diving for my OW students. I want them to be able to use the industry basics. If people don't understand the basics, how can they be expected to safely use advanced equipment or training?

I agree 100%!! In my class a lot of people were saying they will just get a comnputer so they did not spend much time trying to get the tables correct (just enough to pass the class). I think this is a poor choice on their part. What if something happens to your dive computer on the first day of your 7 day dive vacation? It would suck to blow $3000 $4000 or more because you did not want to take the time to learn some basic skills. Besides the money I am not sure I could depend on a really smart wrist watch to keep me safe. I think I will check the tables against the computer. This may change once I start "REAL" diving.

Thanks again to everyone for the help and informatiuon you have provided.

movieflick: I would be happy to sit down with you sometime and go over the tables. I'm in Colo Spgs also. I am NOT an Instructor or DM or any Scuba professional. But, I do have a good understanding of how to use the tables. I just finished my NITROX clase last March, and that class requires use of Tables also. (I found this post via the Rocky Mountain Oysters) group.

I missed the dive table class overview. I was able to figure it out enough to pass the test BUT I do not feel very confident with multiple dive calculations. Can anyone point me to some exercises or more detailed help on this? I am using the actual tables and not the wheel thing.
