I have to be in Providence, RI for a week in late August. Of that week, or maybe 10 days, I will be doing business for 1 or 2, mainly the weekend, so I'd like to dive during the week. I've never been anywhere in that area so thought maybe, just maybe I could get wet. I prefer boat dives but am up for shore dives if what I'm going after is worth it. I prefer EAN. Water temp isn't an issue as long as I know to bring my dry suit, or I can rent one there. Exactly what dives to do depends on how interesting they are.

Thanks

If you want EAN in RI you basically have two choices, Newport Dive Center or Narragansett Pier Dive Shop.

As for water temps, RI is pretty warm in August. Expect upper 60s unless you go really deep. With a name like "ArcticDiver" my guess is that you can handle that without a drysuit! :D If you go to Massachusetts and dive on the north side of Cape Cod the water is typically in the mid 40s to low 50s at depth.

For charters your choices are very limited in RI although one of the boats is pretty famous. The famous one is the Seeker (the boat from the book Shadow Divers) over in Newport. The other option is one boats that works with Narragansett Pier Dive Shop out of Pt Judith. The trick is going to be whether you can find a mid-week charter while you are here.

As for sites, the wreck of the U-853 is the most famous one. It is in 130 ft of water with the deck at 110 so it is an advanced dive. If you do a Google search you'll find a ton of info on it. There are also a lot of other wrecks, many of which are shallower.

RI has tons of great shore diving. We have some nice rocky coastlines that make for some nice scenery. There are also several deep walls accessible from the shore that are covered with anemones. There are too many sites to list, but most of the coolest sites are in Jamestown, RI. I am sure if you fish on this forum in August you can probably find some local RI diver willing to show you some of the good local shore dives.

One cool thing that happens during August is that we get stray tropical fish coming into the area. They mostly hang out in the shallows along the coast, so unless you do shore dives you'll probably miss them.

Go to shorediving.com and get more info on local shore dives. Fort Wethiril (spelling?) is one very popular shore dive in RI. You will also be very close to Cape Ann and some of the BEST shore diving in New England can be found in Cape Ann, Ma. My favorite is Folly Cove. Worth the drive. Maybe 60-90 minutes from RI. Really lovely place with about 25 great shore diving locations! Have fun!

Also, buy Jerry Shine's New England Shore Diving book. Maybe one of the most detailed shore diving books ever written. Worth the 25 bucks!!! His book will answer ALL your shore diving questions for RI and the rest of NE.:D

I work overnights and every other weekend and so am frequently available during the week to play. I'd be glad to get together with you and dive if it's a week that I've got time off.
As far as other charter boats, there are several in Mass. We can pick a day and pick a boat/site and put something together. As said, it's warmer in RI than on the North Shore of MA but in August even the Poling at 100 fsw is a wetsuit dive.

I would suggest you send an email to the link above. This is the Dive Club I belong to, Old Colony Amphibians. It is a very active club whose members (many own boats) that
dive Rhode Island and Mass. every weekend and some nights during the summer.
We have had visitors to the area come out with us many times in the past.

I think we could help you out. We offer gas fills on board as well.

Thanks for the great responses. Now I need to follow up on the references you have given me. The exact dates I'll be there should be firm in another couple weeks. Then we can get down to the details.

In the meantime if anyone has any more suggestions don't be shy.

I have two books "RI adventure diving one and two" they are yours for the asking. If you PM me an address I will send them out to you. I have them memorized or just about, so it's time to pass them on anyway.

Did you find the books useful?
