They work if you jot down only a few words. For longer notes, the "normal" ones work better in my opinion.

Go to Wal-Mart and by the Fisher Price Magna Doodle now called the Doodle Pro, for about 6 bucks, I've been using one for a couple of years and they work great, and if it gets old or screwed up just throw it away and get a new one...several color choices by the way.

They work. My problem with it is it's too bulky. I've used a wrist slate, didn't like the way it fit at depth, it would slide off my arm (one more thing to think about and tighten). So now I use just a small "regular" dive slate. For my purposes it works fine.
Just a thought on slates ...
After over 30 years of diving I have found that slates are most useful for writing notes to myself rather than others. The only exception to that it a slate that has an assortment of pre-written simple commands that you can point to when communicating with another diver.
It takes a little extra work but I/we (my wife and I) have found that a good intro course to sign language is better for diver to diver communication. Sure ...there are the "international hand signals" in the dive world but if you want to have a silent conversation with someone basic "sign" is faster and more efficient.
Might be more than most are willing to undertake but it's just another thought related to diver communication.
By the way though ...if you are still interested in the erasible version, check out the toy aisle at your local Walmart. They have a small (approx 4" x 5") erasible slate for around $5
