We are going to be traveling to the Grand Cayman in July and staying on 7 mile beach up by the Turtle Farm.

We will be diving as a family which includes a 11 year old Junior Padi Open Water diver. Does anyone have any good recommendations for dive shops. We are looking for shallow dives 25-40 ft only.

I would like lots of attention from the Dive Masters, especially for the 11 year old.

thanks in advance.

Uh, so you are aware the normal two tank dive offerings of most operators would include a wall dive followed by a shallow dive. Even the shallowest lip on the top edge of the wall would typically be 50-60ft at most sites. It is simply the underwater geography here that even many of the "shallow" sites may have only a portion of the site shallower than 40ft. Please discuss your needs with your chosen dive operator well in advance.

Divetech is conveniently located near the Turtle Farm. I've seen their DM's working with young divers who were getting their junior cert and was impressed.

Shore diving sounds like your best bet. Ask around there are a number of different shore dive sites.

If you want personal attention call Casey at http://www.neptunesdivers.com/.

Small boat, personal attention, top notch service. You want beat Casey as your DM. They'll pick you up at your hotel or you can meet at the boat which usually hangs out across from the Holiday Inn on 7 Mile.

Dives at the depth you're talking about may depend more on the wishes of all the divers. About 2 months ago we spent a week with them doing about 16-17 dives and none were particularly deep. It may have been possible to hit 80 feet on a couple if you went to the sand but you could have stayed shallower.

Point is... they offer very personalized service. I think you'll like them.

I had a very positive impression of Red Sail Sports. As a father of two teenage divers, I appreciated their eye for safety, clean boats, and great rental equipment for the boys. They also were careful to keep the hotel divers separate from any cruise line divers. The cruise divers were only allowed to dive to 60 ft. since RSS didn't know them or really talk to them before hand.

Bottom Line: There are some quality ops in the Caymans. Contact them to see which of them can match your needs the best. The 11yr old will have to dive Sting Ray City of course.

No, the best friendly, relaxed dive resort on cayman you want to go to is sunset house, AWESOME staff, they have the mermaid statue u see in all magazines right off the shore, couple fin kicks away, it lies at about 40 ft, awesome place for little guys, and the older guys can head off on the boat, stingray city, bring the kid along, do some shore diving, check out the wrecks, relax and have a margarita at there bar or tan by there pool, Ive been there twice this year and its AMAZING!!!!

what other places on GC have you stayed and dove with?

I would recomend eden rock for shore diving. A spectacular dive about 30 ft. Sunst House diving and staff are great but the mermaid is about 60 ft if I remember right.

I was in Grand Cayman in March and did a lot of Shore and Boat dives. We dove with 7 mile watersports for all of the boat dives and they even took people on guided shore dives. http://www.7milediver.com/ ask for Lisa!

I agree that Sunset House was a great dive - the Mermaid was around 60' and is a must see. We saw tons of life on this dive.

My favourite though was Turtle Farm, I really really enjoyed this site and we did 2 night dives here which were teeming with life.
