Iam sure there are dive shop ownwers lurking here on the board, just wondering why they don't offer their products or services here?

The Board is non-commercial by design, because it allows free and honest discussion. The idea is divers talking to divers about diving, finding out what works and what doesn't. That free exchange would be clouded if somebody said "gear X works the best! If you order by midnight tonight...!" etc etc.

That would most likely be followed by spam PMs for low-interest home loans and "personal enlargement" schemes. Pop-up ads. I would run, screaming, and never return.

The shop owners and instructors that are here, tho, are tremendous sources of diving knowledge and experience, and would likely be able to answer almost any question.

Non commercial

If that is the case why is there travel agents and instructors selling trips and courses? Seems to me that is a commercial enterprise.

But no necessarliy a bad thing. Natasha sells travel. Fred T sells backplates. Bob3 sells drysuits. They provide good, useful services at good prices.

I would not mind at all if others were allowed to do the same. Right now there is a post by someone who is looking for an inexpensive source for Force FIns. I would not object at all if an LDS owner who carries the product posted, "Hey call me. I'll sell them to you for xx$."

No coercion. No dishonesty. Just offerring someone something that they want. What would it hurt?

Some trips that have been posted, such as the Wreckmania II trip, are sponsored by the board as a way to get members together to meet and dive together.

What you would find Ravie is that some spammer would ask the question with a sockpuppet (multiple account) and then "answer" it with their commercial.

Folks... Scuba Board cost money to run... and at present we reap the benefit from other folks sacrifice and it certainly would be nice for it to generate a little income to pay for the play.

And right now that is being considered... how to accomodate this without commercializing the Board which none of us want.

Be patient and understanding as the management works through these things.

Even if they are trips and courses to get board members together they are still commercial in nature in that those organizing profit from it. My question why not let other commercial businesses to the same?

who also post trips available. They have spots open because of cancellations or not enough interest from their own group. So, I see no harm with people organizing trips that can bring fellow board members together to meet, socialize with and dive.

If you read through threads in each of the different chapters you will notice there are organized trips to various places in their general vicinity. These are not only tolerated but welcomed. And at the same time, fellow board members from other parts of the country/world are more than welcome to participate.

I especially find no problem with Natasha doing what she is doing, other than the bad timing  on her scheduled events vs my available time.

I assume you are referring to what goes on over at the Rodales board?

... it is obvious that you have something you would like to sell. As Pug once bubbled: "Be patient and understanding as the management works through these things."
