I understand a dive shop in monterey is for sale. Does anyone know which one. and is it all about location when looking to invest into one. I know I had 2 in my town 15yrs apart and they were both nice people ( one was called Seahorse Scuba ) cant' remember the other, thats where i got cert in 79 ( the other, in fairfield ), and they both went under...just wondering if it has to be at the location rather than in a town somewhere.

Just a guess, but I'd say there are a couple of factors to making a dive shop work.

1. Have a great staff with great attitudes.
2. Have a good location.
3. Only sell gear from suppliers that will let you sell it your way for what you want to sell it for.
4. Know what you're talking about.
5. Keep up with the times. This is the age of the internet. Use it or lose it.

Just my .02 worth.

I suppose if the price is right, any/all of the dive shops in Monterey would be for sale.

Interestinly enough, I heard the same rumor about a Monterey dive shop; however, since it's just a rumor, I won't say which shop it's supposed to be.

Cheers, Jeff

I haven't heard anything, but I think Monterey has one
or two too many dive shops. I remember when there were
two (Bamboo Reef and Aquarius DelMonte (in what is now
Dodi Auto Sales a block down from the current location).
Two hours to get fills on a nice Saturday afternoon. So
two isn't enough. But five seems like more than can
be supported.

Dive shops can survive away from Monterey. In addition
to the five in Monterey, there are about 25 in the SF Bay
area and another five or so in the Central Valley.

Well, if you apply a sort of differential diagnosis to the question based on the essential data contained here and here you can say the following:

Aquarius Dive Shop - NO
Glenn's Aquarius II (no connection to above shop, by the way) - NO
Monterey Dive Center - NO
Bamboo Reef - NO

Which leaves Manta Ray. I don't know the marital staus of the owner but he does have a day job.
