I just picked up a Dive Rite Transpac and trek wing that is brand new and have a question about it. I also have an oms iq pack with 45lb wing and have noticed that the oms wing rides perfect on the harness so that I can look up underwater and my head not hit the first stage or wing. However, on my dive rite rig, the only way to mount my wing is high on the harness which makes it very uncomfortable underwater. My wing is pushing into the back of my head. I mounted it the only way I could as the cam straps will only fit through the holes. I was wondering if anyone else kinows about this. My question is does the dive rite wings ride high on the transpac/ I have no other divers around with the same rig to check. Thanks.

I am using a Trans Plate (ss) and about the only diff is the padding...but ...I am also using as my wing the REC.

I have found I can mount the wing mid way...and low...but the cam bands will not line up when I try to use the highest mounting holes on the wing and plate.

With the wing mid mounted....I have not had any occurance of hitting it with my head.

But that is my experience with a trans plate. The pac might just be a tad diff.

I think it may be a little different. To mount it mid way on the pac, i would have to use the holes that the cam straps are covering which are the only slots I can use to thread the straps through on the harness. Its really starting to get to me!

Hopefully I got the idea across.....there are a high and a low and a mid set of places on the wing where one can put the straps. I cant use the low ones because the tank cam straps just dont work out right. SO I take the middle ones .

good luck

I dive the TransPac II with Trek wing, and had the same issue. First dive was not so fun. The wing rode up since there is a lot of play in the cam strap holes on the Trek wing.

To prevent the wing from riding up, I threaded the plastic bolt/nut through the grommet mounting holes (used for doubles), locking the wing to the softpack. The cam bands interfere with the top mounting holes, so I was only able to use the bottom one. So instead of the cam bands keeping the wing in place, the plastic bolt/nut is.

IMHO, not a great design. It would have been better if no bolts were required, or it used both mounting holes to keep the wing in place. However, I've had over 40 dives with it setup this way, and it's been great otherwise.

note: the grommet mounting holes are labled [6] in the TransPac manual diagram.

Thanks for the suggestion. I will try it tonight as I am off for a dive in the am. So what I will do is remove the bolts currently holding the wing to the pack (2), eliminate the top one and only use the bottom one which will allow me to mount the wing lower.
Pretty crappy R& D on their part! If you look at the other wings, they all have 4 or more grommets to mount to the harness where as the trek only has 2!

You might also try and email or call Dive Rite and experss your concerns etc.

I have been diving the transpac and now the transpac II for over 4 years and have never had any problems that Dive Rite could address and address very quickly, either by email or phone.

I know that this is a necro-post, but I'd like to comment just for posterity.

The issue isn't the wing itself, but the way that you're donning it. Dive Rite has a video on the proper way to don a Transpac. You're probably tightening the shoulder straps first when you should be tightening them last.

The order of operations is something like: put the harness on with totally loose shoulder straps, clip the chest buckle, stand up, lock in the waist strap where it should be, adjust the crotch strap so it holds down the waist strap, then tighten the shoulder straps. If you tighten the shoulder straps first, you'll probably make them too short like a backpack and the rig will ride high.

I have the transpac and rec wing. It rides high with a single and cam bands. I solved the problem by marking where I wanted the wing in relation to the transpac slots, and took the wing to a shoe shop. They cut out the material and reinforce stitched the whole area and placed a 1 inch strap below area opening to keep the back from spreading out. If you look at the newer Dive Rite wings, you will see where they are using 2 straps. One horizontal and one vertical, allowing you to move the wing up/down on the back. That is where I got the Idea. Since the placement of where I wanted the wing for doubles is about the same for the single setup. Cost me 14 bucks. Modify the wing, not the soft backplate. That still has to hold the weight and torsion of the doubles.

By the way... There is no rule to prevent you from adding more grommets to a wing with only one or two. Just have the shop re-enforce the area with a strap sewn in and then you punch a hole, burn it, and add the grommet.

I am pretty well known at this shop. I've had them repair stitching on a wet suit, make a butt plate and build a nylon web shoulder harness for my weight belt. You could probably get this done at an alterations shop too.
