Hi everyone!

I'm applying for a job at a local dive shop, and the manager asked for a "dive resume outlining your dive history".

Maybe this is common knowledge but I'm not really sure what exactly that is... Is it just a list of all your dives? Is there a specific format like one for an actual resume?

It'd be great to get some good advice from some fellow divers!

Thanks in advance!

When you write a resume, there are two main forms that you have to choose from

1) Chronological, showing (normally) work history with your most recent jobs listed first and so forth.

2) Functional, which puts the emphasis on skills and experience as opposed to outlining in which order you have acquired those skills and experience.

Most of the time you see chronological resumes. Functional resumes are normally used in situations where people are changing careers or in situations where gaps in employment history could make a chronological resume raise some questions.

In your case I would consider writing a functional resume. You could list experience (numbers of dives) environments (trips you have taken), courses you've followed,. accomplishments etc. So in this case a functional resume would allow you to say more about your "dive history" than just listing "first I did this, and then I did that..."

Hope that helps.

I'd agree, with less than 50 (assuming your dive history is correct on your profile) a functional resume will suit you better. I assume this isn't for a teaching position but just shop staff so it's probably more a formality than anything else. They're likely to tell you what they want to emphasize in gear sales but listing your experience may be to give them some indication of how much you've already dealt with in your experiences so far.

'Loan' them your dive computer---but--- tell em you WANT it back.......:)........But, think they're wanting you to list your dive certification(s) and maybe where you've been diving(ie ?including total dives @ each place???..you haven't dived much so listing them all wouldn't be that tuff)..........good luck.....
