Met up with the fine folks of the H2O Below for a dive charter last Sunday (August 14). The primary concern was finding a way around the stiff currents that had plagued our stretch of the Gulf for the two previous days. We had originally thought to go to the Brass Wreck, but there's not much left to dive in that direction, so we chose a confirmed site (Tug Deliverance) closest to the Brass Wreck, but still in the middle of everything else, the thinking being that if the current was still terrible, we could head to the Brass, and if it had tamed down a bit, we could pick something closer. This turned out to be a wise plan, because the crazy currents ended up moving to the East, right on top of the Brass
Our second drop was the Tug Heron/LCM. I've hit these locations frequently, but I'm almost always spearfishing, so it was nice to be able to dive these sites, and actually take a look at them for a change. I spotted many octopuses, most in the larger range, but also spotted loads of tropicals, a moray eel, and of course, at least one lionfish per location
The current had quieted considerably, but we still had a muck layer that made the diving dark. Viz was around 30ft and hazy.
On our surface interval, we had oranges, and crackers with a cheese ball. I usually don't eat while I'm diving, but I couldn't resist either, and ate more than my fair share of both. Food for the ride home was an assortment of deli sandwiches. I opted for a cuban that turned out to be delicious.
As usual, the Captain and crew of the H2O Below went above and beyond. Can't wait for my next trip.
