My Dad is in town visiting and I have been trying to get him comfortable in the water so after 4 dives at Vortex yesterday I decided to try out Ft. Pickens and see how that went. I wrangled Grouper321 into joining and we all met near the showers at around 6:00 PM. We were way off from high tide but since it is a Neap tide this weekend we thought that we might give it a try anyways.
We hit the water at 6:30 PM and made our way right down to the Pipe Organ where there was a nice sized Octopus hanging out. We played around with him for a bit before we wandered a bit to the West checking out the tires and several rocks as we went. I saw a few more Ocotopus just starting to come out for the evening hunt and I managed to coax out a small Octopus that was very interested in touching me. We all took our turn letting him run around on us before we placed him back into a small hole in a rock and continued on our way.
We spotted several Striped Burrfish, a ton of soap fish and a couple of Toad fish, a large school of spades, some nice sized sheepsheads and some very, very small Frogfish and a tiny Flounder that looked like he might belong at Morrison's.
Viz was only about 5 feet but the water was very warm at the top with only a couple of colder thermoclines deeper. I marked a min temp of 72*, we were down 65 minutes and I marked a max depth of 41 feet. I haven't opened my camera to process the Octopus pics and video as we are going offshore early in the AM so I'll have to post them tomorrow.
