Today, Earl, Ed and I headed out to dive both casualties of the Battle of Point Judith: the U-853 and the stern section of the Blackpoint.
For the first dive on the U-853 I did a penetration (Earl and Ed both stayed outside). This was my first time doing a penetration dive on the sub, although it was my 6th dive on the wreck. I dropped down into the forward blasthole and headed aft into the control room. Then doubled back forward all the way up to the forward torpedo room. Then went back aft to the blast hole and made my exit. I still had a bit of bottom time left so I swam all the way back to the stern and then back to the conning tower where I made my ascent up the mooring.
Dive 2 was the Blackpoint stern section, which conveniently had a nice mooring buoy.
Sadly, the day was not without casualties.....Earl's hat (RIP ?-2007) was blown off his head and lost at sea while en-route to the Blackpoint. I have attached a photo which shows Earl's hat just hours before its untimely demise! Plus a sea anemone from the Blackpoint for kicks!
