Diving Lake Michigan is like a box of chocolates - you never know what you get but it's bound to be good. We slipped the dock around 0830 intending to dive on the Northerner. We got to the spot and the jugs were missing so we hunted around for a while and couldn't find it. Oh well, plan B - two dives on Niagara instead of one.
A bright, sunny day but a little hazy with surface viz around 5 miles. Temp was in the mid 80s, seas were South around 1 foot with no swell, breeze was about 5 SSE. Splashed the downline shortly after 11 and swam around the main part of the wreck in 35-48 ffw. Bottom temp was in the low 60s with viz about 40 feet, but things are starting to cloud up with the algae blooming now that the water is warming up. Lots of fish today - the usual burbot hanging around the bottom as well as walleye and perch at the thermocline.
After SI of about 1:15 dove again, this time following the line to the boilers. These are still a sight - they're huge. You can only imagine the sound this ship must have made plying her trade up and down the coast.
Thanks again to Brad and the SS MoneySaver for another great trip, also to guest Dean810 - this was an awesome dive.
