Stuck with staying in Cancun instead of Playa or Coz. Does anybody have any suggestions for good dive operators in Cancun?

I didn't dive in Cancun when we were there, I did my diving in Playa and Coz earlier in the trip. My boss dove one day in Cancun with Manta Divers, and the second day he'd planned to dive was blown out. From what I heard being blown out in Cancun isn't too unusual. They dove one of the navy wrecks (mine sweeper I think).

He didn't have any problem with them, in fact he sold his can-light to the divemaster because apparently gear is expensive and hard to come by in Mexico. That's when I understood why the divemaster in Playa wanted to buy my spare mask.

I have a good friend who lives in Cancun so I have dove there quite a bit. The reefs aren't anywhere near as spectacular as the wall in Cozumel, but there is some good diving. My favorite spot, and I can't think of the name of it off the top of my head, is a shallow reef, no more than 30 feet deep, located in the National Park. It isn't Manchones. The marine life is amazing, huge schools of fish...sometimes you can see 30 - 50 Barracuda at a time. My friend is an instructor so I always dove with him, but he has closed his dive shop. Where are you staying? If you want I will try to get him to give me some recommendations for you. Just PM me and let me know.

I've dove with Manta Divers several times. They are not a bad outfit unlike the other "cattle-boat" ops in Cancun. They are located on the beach where the popular "Fat Tuesdays" spring break location is. Most of the other ops are on the lagoon side of Cancun.

Ask them to take you to the General Anaya wreck (the former navy mine sweeper). It's one of my fave dives and there's a resident school of eagle rays.

Cheers.
