ok, i've been a diver approaching five years now, and have been taking 2 dive magazines, plus i receive the magazine Alert Diver from DAN. now they are taking up a considerable amount of shelf space in a closet. i hate to get rid of them, but yet, i haven't been going back to them and using them.......i bet you can probably access all the back issue stuff online these days.......should i give them away? the other thing i was thinking about doing was this.....go back through them and tear out articles on particular destinations that are still on our list to go to, and places we may return to, and any articles about diving/skills that i like, and organize them into a binder for future reference, then toss the magazines. that way, that info is at my fingertips, with pictures and all. give me your ideas/thoughts please. thanks in advance

I saved about 40 until I had no room. I tried to give them away but discarded them. Now Im collecting them again. They are too commercialized to really want them as collectors items but the training info in them is great.

If you know of a new diver getting started consider handing the collection down. The long format features are much more detailed and better illustrated than any class text.

So far I have all of mine and I can't say I have dug back into them much either. I'm a habitual pack rat so they may be around for a while.

or take them down to the Local Dive shop and see if you can put them in a "give away pile"

or take them to a local dive club to give to members.

take the address labels off like Walter suggested though.

Slice and dice.
Scuba saurus is right, they are very comercialized, just cut out the articles you like, and save them. you'll realize how many adds there are then. You can start a folder, or notebook for the various subjects you are interested in. You may want to group all the articles on Bouancy; Caribean diving; safety tips; Photography, etc. . Whatever you would like to look up at some time in the future.

Move 'em out. Good for reading "while you're sitting down", but after that? :flush:

Best info is right here on SB.

I've always been a "saver". You know, "just in case". But the reality is that I don't even take the time to read the current issue, much less thumb through back issues. And in this internet information age, I'm not sure they even have value for future reference. By the time you actually visit one of those destinations, you'll probably be better off getting current info from the internet.

Living in a small place in NYC we have a rule that if it hasn't been touched in a year it gets donated, sold, or thrown out. Live like that for a while and you start to realize just how little you really need to own. Libraries and the internet are wonderful!

Donate vote for me as well.

I hate doing it, but I tear out the articles I want to save from the magazines I read. I have a file box with folders that I use to store the articles. I have files for places I want to go and also any safety articles. Plus a have a file marked Wish List for things I'd love to have someday.

If you don't want to tear out articles, I'd give the magazines to a community center or someplace where kids and teens might get to dream over the pages. Also high schools might like to have the magazines. Just some ideas.
