I am a new diver and am looking for some spots to go close to home to get in some dive experience. I am located in Flint, MI. Would like some close enough to go for a few hours or so and then some day trips within 100 miles. Any ideas?

Much appreciate it!

As the ice melts over the next month it will be easier to find spots. There are three quarries in Northern Ohio and one in Michigan. My Dive Center runs the scuba concession at White Star Quarry (see link below) and it opens April 1. Portage Quarry is in Bowling Green and It opens the end of April I think. Gilboa Quarry, a little further south is in Gilboa, Ohio and I am pretty sure it is open year round but call ahead for ice conditions. The Michigan quarry is in Monroe and I am not sure when they open. Closer to you there is Lake Huron, the St Claire River, Higgins Lake, Maceday Lake, Orchard lake and Spring Mill Pond. Some need a little more skill than others. My guess is that your best bet will be to get with the people at your Local Dive Center and ask them for their fun dive dates. I know we do a fun dive at least every two weeks and are diving somewhere every weekend at our Dive Center, Divers Incorporated.

Hope to see you diving this summer.

HI, I also live in Flint. I'm assuming you go out of the Dive shop on corunna Rd. I do alot of local dives once the ice melts if you want to pm me and let me know when your available. I will let you know when I'm going. Also if you look a little further down in this forum you will see a thread for our Annual spring Meet-N-Greet. that is a great place for new divers to come and get some practice. plus a chance to meet other divers to line up some buddy's for diving once the weather turns nice. why dont you give it a read and come on down and joins us if you think you would like to go let me know you can car pool with the rest of us going down for the Meet-N-Greet.
