I have often wonder why dive shops dont keep a buddy dive list where other divers can go to to look up a buddy to go diving with. most of us have buddies that we normally go with, but how 'bout thoses day you can. Wouldn;t it be nice to go to a local dive shop and click on buddy list to find one to go diving with. After all, to be fair they ask us not to shop on-line for gear, why can't they maintain a list. It can't be all that hard.

If it were me with the dive shop I'd be concerned that the next question from the person looking for the buddy would be "what do you thnk of so and so". Now the shop owner has to either endorse or say otherwise of a customer.

I was going to point out the Divers Den list too.

Then of course there is the NELD group here! I actually prefer it here because you can look up the persons other posts and get an idea of their possible experience level.

Another option is dive clubs, I know MWDC [in Framingham] dives every saturday out on Cape Ann, and otherwise has an active diving base. I'm not sure if there are any clubs closer to you, but a good club is great for building your buddy pool.

Better than a buddy list is someone at the shop who knows many divers and their abilities and preferences and knows a little about you. Make friends with the shop owner and staff!!

Also, for any commercial dive sites you might want to patronize, the owner and staff should also be able to recommend you to others or set up a dive date for you.

Most dive sites will also have dive shops nearby to them--see my first recommendation.

There is no substitute for being interested and friendly, and open to diving with whomever is recommended. Personally, I would always make the first dive or 2 easier and shallower ones so I can assess the buddy's abilities and compatibility to my style.
