For a good "under $50" light, I'd say look into the Pelican Nemo 4C or 8C. Nice smooth, tight beam. Not too big, not too small. Good all around light for the money.
Also look at the, the Underwater Kinetics "Sunlight" C4/C8 & D4/D8 series. Not as smooth and tight a beam as the Nemo, but they have dual lamps, and you can change lamps even while under water! There are also LED versions of the C4 & C8 which cost a bit more, but use less batteries and provide a whiter light that penetrates water better (if you get the Halogen C4 or C8, it can later be upgraded to LED by purchasing the eLED module).

Any of the C8s will work for you. I use a UK C8 as main and a Ikelite mini-c which uses 4 C cells in my pocket as a backup. I will upgrade to the LED in the next while to increase battery life. I stick to the C lights so as to use one battery size in my lights.
I had an D8, it had more light but I also needed to recharge 8 D size batteries which takes 8-12 hours per 4 which tied up my big charger.

The Nemo already mentioned is a great light - but not to carry routinely for hunting under ledges and the like and bringing out colors at depth in daylight - it's a little too bulky.
