I agree with SpyderTek.

Most divers in Europe are amazed at how much we pay for our diving equipment in the U.S.

Most of the shops in the U.K., while not being as inexpensive as DiveINN or SimplyScuba, are still much cheaper than any dive shop in the U.S.

I have not bought anything yet but this was a question as if it is an item that should be checked by a dive shop I will buy it from the dive shop. I would not expect a LDS to be verry helpful with my questions If I bought the Items on line.

manny other industrys have had to make adjustments because of the internet and it is foolhardy to expect it to skip the scuba industry.

I am resurching both sides because I like to support my LDS but I also like to support my kids.

unlike some people I will not wast my LDS's time If I am concidering buying on line as I have worked in sales manny times

If I purshase a reg/octo set from Dive Inn, will my LDS assemble it for me along with my BC's power inflator and my gauges? They'll no doubt charge a fee, any idea how much? Or will they flat out refuse since the products were not purchased from them?

I would believe they would service it, WHY NOT? What is the difference if you bought it online, at your LDS or on a dive trip on vacation.

By the looks of some of these post you would think that you can't take any equipment to your LDS unless you've purchased the equipment there. Horsefeathers!

Question?.

If you were on vacation and your reg broke, got lost, whatever, and you had to purchase another at the LDS on the island, WOULD YOU TAKE IT BACK TO YOUR HOMETOWN LDS TO SERVICE? AND FOR FUTURE SERVICE? EVEN THOUGH YOU DIDN"T BUY IT THERE.

I sure would.

"A returned product is just another chance to make a sale"

If the dive shop was smart they would install your stuff-for a fee-and then try to sell you something else. You have just bought the basics of diving and have just scratched the surface of the equipment purchasing/travel offerings. It would be foolish of them to ignore you-getting the customer in the store is half the battle.

On the other hand many dive shops seem to despise on line sales and will shoot themselves in the foot to show you just how bad saving 30-50% is!

You should just do it yourself. Get a couple of flat wrenches from the local auto parts store. Get a book from the library on how to do this-or the LDS. And put on your own hoses. Screwing on hoses to a first stage is the minimal a diver should be able to do. It requires as much mechanical ability as turning a screw. DON'T OVERTIGHEN THOSE SCREWS. They don't have to be really tight just tighter than finger tight. The O ring on the hose will do the rest.

As much as I rail against the high price of dive gear in the U.S. and at dive shops I am heading to my LDS to put on a pair of cuff rings. The price in the store is $20.00 more than online but the help I'll get is......well, priceless.

If your LDS will not service equipment you did not buy there (or gives you a hard time about it) than they only see you as a credit card and are not interested in you as a diver... I would go to another shop at that point. I know that most shops make very little money and I believe in supporting good shops, but as someone else said I would like to support my family as well. Maybe if the industry PUBLISHED their prices then the internet shops would go away.... I find it hard to believe that I can purchase a regulator for 50% of the price online as compared to the LDS... thats crap, somethings wrong here....

The local dive shops are getting upset at the wrong people. They can't blame the consumers for getting the best deal they can -- that is capitalism. If Scuba Pro (for example) is allowing DiveINN (for example) to sell their products that cheap, and then requiring a LDS to sell at a given price that is twice as much as DiveINN's, then the LDS's out there have to rise up and give Scuba Pro an ulitmatum or something.
It is the manufacturers that are allowing this to occur, not the consumers or the on-line dive shops. I was just talking to the local dive shop owner here in town for two hours about this yesterday, and he told me that everytime he hears about a place selling cheap gear, he calls his rep and tears him a new _______. All I can say, is that should tell ya something about the manufacturers out there and how they view the LDS's. They know what's going on with DiveINN and Liesure Pro.

I think the rules will have to change or else LDS's will lose some money, because the internet isn't going away.

I just ordered a ScubaPro reg set from Liesure Pro. My LDS (which happens to be where I'm taking my Cert classes) also sells Scubapro.
Because I bought my Regulator and other items from Liesure pro, my LDS / Instructor will still preform a safety check on it. Won't he? I did buy about $500 worth of gear from him too. I just thought I could get a better deal on the Regs. Which I did.......

I hope he doesn't get pissy........ that would make for a long class........lmao

I purchased a tx50 from diveinn Friday 3/15 at 8am ($254.76 all included) and it was on my doorstep 10am Monday 3/18... it looks great. I have not dove it yet but will keep all of you posted... filled out the warrantee card and sent it in today also!! I saved $192 by ordering online...about the price of a nice halcyon backplate (no wings!!!)

I hope he doesn't get pissy........ that would make for a long class........lmao

If he does (and he may) then you should remind him of your purchases from him also.... I like my LDS owner and want to see him succeed, I would have nobody else work on my equipment (unless it was an emergency) but I also have to eat. The internet pricing reflects the industry, not the consumer.

hello,
Getting gear from the net is very affordable vs your LDS.
Over the net/phone/publication prices are low for the very obvious reasons. (lower fixed costs). I sometines spend 2 hours with a customer (I work and teach at a dive store part time) explaining him/her diffrent products to see them buy via the net (ex: e-bay). Even though I a loose a sale, I don't get angry, because I know that by taking the time, I've made (hopefully) a future customer, and that this person will buy a product that he/she is well informed about. BUT, it is our LDS that keep us in the water, so keeping that in mind try to see if the dive store can match the net price (not likely) but may be you can get deals and services that will make up your mind. Ex; on the purchase of a drysuit you get a drysuit course free!

I do agree that it is an industry conflict and no consumer should be made to feel bad in a dive store for having bought thier equipment on line. But I think that the after sale service when you buy from your LDS goes a long way!
