I'm a Fish!
Anyone been there? They said they might be open this monday, if they are I'm headed up there, anyone interested or has anyone been that could fill me in a little on what there is to see and just how big the quarry is compared to say ABWA?

Samller than ABW, and poorer viz, but they are closer. They have a shovel that is interesting to dive on. I know they were going to sink a boat or two but don't know if they have yet.

Went there about a month ago...

Comparing to ABW: DH is smaller and visibility was pretty bad (<10ft). They did say that they are trying to do something to clear up the place (putting some anti-algae chemicals in the water, or something), so maybe it will improve at some point.

Overall, I like ABW facilities better, but can't beat how short the drive to DH is from Atlanta area....

I'm headed up there this morning, just wanted a change of scenery. The fact that it's 165' will be another # for the book too lol

Sweet! Call me and let me know how it turned out; I'd definitely be up for a trip next weekend if it turns out to be worth the 4-5 hour drive.

Yeah, let us know how it went. I'm particularly interested in finding out if visibility has improved at all...

I did a few dives at Dive haven, the place is really nice.

The viz was pretty rough though, you could not make out a 2nd diver at >8-10ft if you were not deeper than 80'. The viz at 130-160' with a nice bright light though was not bad at all, somewhere around 30' I would guess

They have quite a few things to see there and everything within recreational depths has guidelines going between it so you can find it even in low viz like it was yesterday. Most of the intentionally sunk items are within 60'. They have an upright school bus, a crane, and multiple boats. Everything is penetrateable with backmount 8" doubles.

If you venture off to the deep part in the middle, take lights. I did two dives in the deep end to 158' and 160', water temps were in the low 40's and below about 100-110' all the particulate in the top of the quarry literally blocks out all the sunlight. And for those tech divers, they will fill your tanks as you request *wink*

The max depth is supposed to be 165' but I couldn't find that extra 5' on my first trip.

All in all, not a bad place to dive at all, however, it is definitely a more challenging environment than Blue water in Pelham.

Will dive again for sure.

It's been a couple weeks since your OP, but I was just at the site yesterday and the facility is set up well. As far as what there is to see:

They just sunk a boat in about 55-60 ft of water right off of the main platform. A couple of kicks away and in much shallower water is an old Ford Van (15-20 feet). Additionally, there is a crane, a schoolbus, and a few other sunken boats around the quarry. While it is said to be 165' feet, the thermacline is pretty serious. Yesterday the surface temp was ~88-90 degrees and at 30 feet dropped to the mid-low 60's. Visibility was about the same at this depth asthe surface, 10-12 feet. At further depths the temperature was reported as getting down to 41 degrees, however, since I was hoodless and gloveless (and tend to get cold easily) I can't verify anything lower.

Currently, they are 'Only open on weekends' and don't answer the phones during the week, which makes contacting them somewhat difficult. They do, however, update their facebook page almost daily and it is possible to talk to someone through that platform during the week.

All in all it was a very pretty site, adequate vis, and friendly staff. With the varying platform depths (4', 6', 12' 20' 60'...) it was set up very well for C.E. which is what I was there for. Also -- being 3 hours closer to me than any other alternative is a huge plus. I will be going back there.

Yea I will definitely be back, I just don't know when. Thanks to cerich(HOG) I have a new dry suit I will be testing out there next time I go.

And if he hurries up and finishes his can lights I might be testing one of those out too :D
