Lake Travis- Oasis bluff
3/18/10
2 dives, 1st 10:30 am
max depth 113 ffw, avg. depth 70 ffw
45 min bottom time
bottom temp 50 deg, surface temp 60 deg

2nd dive similar to 1st. A little shallower with more bottom time.

vis 10 ft on the top 30 ft, 6 ft at 75 ft and below, kinda foggy down deeper.

A bright sunny morning, calm winds, not much boater traffic. Anchored in 30 ft of water. As I dropped down saw a school of about 20-30 good size fish, maybe 3-5 lb. Don't know what they were since they didn't hang around. My guess was either large shad or small stripers. After checking my anchor I dove down to grottos the top of which are around 75 ft. From there the wall dropped down to about 110 ft. The vis is getting better, I could almost make out back wall of the grottos from the entrance. Second dive found a brand new anchor, always fun to find treasure :- )

Windy Point (Lived up to its name today)
2 dives starting around 1PM.
The wind was really whipping today, and getting in was interesting due to the waves. Vis was surprisingly good considering what the surface was doing. We hit the 30, 60, and 100 foot platforms off of Stair 3, and I could see across all of them, so figure around 10 foot vis or so. Then we came up to the ledge around 75 and went up to the chain to the platform of stair 1. Not too bad. Oh, but thankfully it was all for a drysuit course, so we were nice and warm in the 52 degrees at depth.

[Lake Travis Scuba]

Four divers completed their Spring Break Open Water Scuba Certification today. Way to go Wanda, Jordan, Chris and Mitch. They did a great job and got a chance to experience diving at Aquarena Center.

Visibility today was significantly reduced due to large number of classes doing certification dives at the same time, lot of sediment kicked up. These photos make vis appear better than it was. Saturday visibility was better because our class started at noon, the place cleared out by 2:30.

Athens Scuba Park 3/21/10

Temp: 53 deg.
Vis: 7-10 feet
Depth: 25 feet


Did a 38 minute dive, vis was patchy. We were there as part of an ITC prep day, where we taught skills to "students" who were godawful in the water.

The worst part of the dive was getting in and getting out, as the air temperature was in the 30's and it was snowing. My hands actually got warmer when i got in the water.

Not a bad day of diving, I'm glad Athens is open again, just stay off the bottom muck! (shudder)

Lake Travis - Jungle Gym w/ Lake Travis Scuba
Air Temp: Warm 70's, very nice sunny day
Surface Temp: 56f
Depth Temp: 51f at Max 122'
Vis: 5-10 feet increasing w/ depth, 10+ at depth 122'
Lake level: 680.95'msl - OK, I'm calling it FULL POOL!ooldive:

K-valve and I went out with Lake Travis Scuba to put in a mooring line down to the Jungle Gym. Until now, diving the Jungle Gym and the really cool grottos north of Mansfield required plenty of hiking, swimming, and sometimes searching to find the downline. Now, you can spare your air and your energy and dive it by boat!

Visibility is definitely improving and it only got better with depth. At 122' it looked like a good 10+ feet, however w/ the task at hand we didn't get to go explore and wrecked the vis on the structure where we were working. I was surprised at how much silt had built up on the downline. I'm betting the rest of the site is looking spooky cool right now (if you have dived there before you know what I mean by spooky )

This is a pretty unique dive site - after dropping skydive style down the mooring line you hit the structure at 120' (full pool). There are many surprises to discover at depth, plus room to explore deeper (depth finder showed 175' in the nearby channel). From the main structure you can follow a permanent orange line over and up to the wall to some really nice grottos both north and south along the wall.

Wreck Alley - Lake Travis 3/28/2010

I've only been to this site about 20 or so times, but I think today was the best the viz was the best I've seen here. I was pretty surprised, to be honest. I will say that the group as a whole today had much more experience than the typical AOW classes and such that I generally dive the site with so there wasn't a lot of bottom farming if any going on. Good stuff!

The lake was pretty choppy with high winds. I kinda feel like I'm still on the boat irate6:

54 degrees at 70 feet iirc, viz must have been 12-15ish at depth (or it had been too long and I was just cold and hallucinating).

Big thanks to Robert & Lake Travis Scuba for taking us out to do some work. Hopefully it'll be well appreciated by divers and instructors this summer.

Scuba Park - Stillhouse Hollow

54 degrees at max depth of 49 ft.
Viability - 8 to 10 ft.
Duration - 44 min.

210 degree azimuth from the concrete block on the shore takes you to the dive platform approx 200 ft out and 16 ft down. Line from the platform take you to two boats, one a small bass boat, followed by a much larger cabin boat (penetrable) with a resident 3 ft catfish. Line from the stern takes you to the power plant at 49 ft. For the tech folks, there may be a couple of penetration, overhead enclosed dives at this site. Not being tech certified I've not gone into either so I don't know the extent of them.

Max Depth - 126'
Visibility - 8' avg.

Explored the Jungle Gym with Zinc and visited the skeleton, which is sporting a old school side-window mask and pink snorkel. After a short visit, Zinc did some clearing of entanglements while I took a quick look around before ascending.

Given the depth of this site, it is recommended for divers with experience doing deep dives. The descent is a straight drop down the mooring line to the Jungle Gym, arriving at the top around 120'. We are discussing pulling a line to the nearby wall with grottos at shallower depths to allow for longer recreational dives after a brief visit to Jungle Gym.

A line at the base of the Jungle Gym extends down to further depths but this has yet to be explored.
