Any new diver needs to ask what type of diver am I. Do I plan to go every chance I get to dive local sites and take weekend regional trips, or will I go diving shallow on a reef once a year? If you are diving without a computer and only plan to go on one trip a year to take underwater pictures then you will have a your answer. If you plan to be more active in your diving then using a computer is not a bad idea, but it is something you do not have to have right away when you are first starting out. Once you determine how active of a diver you will be and what type of diver you plan to develope into will help you decide what gear purchases are appropriate for you. Just do your homework on the gear before you buy. And just have fun!

I would go for a computer first personally. I like to have it as a back up to my dive plan. For me having a computer is kinda like driving safely AND wearing a safety belt.

But if you are REALLY itching for a camera then go for that. Do what makes you happy and keeps you safe.

Happy diving!
