What the heck. You can't take the money with you in the end. Buy both!

ok... i am doing this because i am sincerely interested.

Uncle Pug and RTodd are right in this respect:

if there is a better alternative than using a computer, then people should use it.

why?

because it's better.

ok... fair enough. now, several people have asked and we have gotten bits and
pieces of the answer.

until i get a better alternative to the computer, that's what i am going to continue doing.

so, how do i get that better alternative? can someone give me names of books,
websites, whatver, where i can learn how to dive without bringing a computer along?

if it's better, i'll do it.

i have nothing to lose but my lack of knowledge.

only if i fall in a bonfire?

i'm somewhat confused by your question, but i'll play it straight. nope, i don't
smoke anything legal or illegal.

You are close to ground zero for this so go take a DIRF class. Then, come back and ask questions and be prepared to listen.

well, i've taken the DIR-F class.

so now i'm asking and am prepared to listen

what better alternative is there to letting the computer calculate your NDL's?

For those who would like to discuss how it is possible to do multilevel dives without a dive computer please read some of the other threads here on ScubaBoard about computerless diving and ask questions or respond in those threads.

Andy... like I said in an earlier post... in isn't about NDL's.... there really isn't such a thing. It isn't about calculating either. It is about following the deco curve.

Kim... my poor old brain isn't worth stealing.

Hmmmm. this is a tough one. I'd say if you've been diving without a computer this whole time then go for the camera, but if you're just starting out then I'd get a good computer. I personally use an Oceanic VT Pro and Pentax Optio S5i. The camera and housing can both be had for under 500 bucks, not a bad deal. Check out my photos. Its not the camera its the photographer behind the lens.
