Although I've had my reg/computer set up searched in my hand luggage (oddly enough, in Hawaii and Australia, but not at LAX), they've never used the hand wand on it. They simply wanted to know why I'd have an object with lots of hoses in my carry on.

However, some thing strange happened at Honolulu last Spring. Naturally, the TSA people there searched the bag, and they opened it up. They completely took out the reg/computer setup, and even removed my dive log book and RDP from the pocket of my reg bag. Then, THEY PUT THE WHOLE THING BACK THROUGH X-RAY AGAIN? She just searched every nook and cranny of my carry-on; why are they having to x-ray it again?

As stated above, the same bag doesn't raise an eye-brow at LAX.

Count yourself lucky - They've always made me unpack my reg bag at LAX.

What do you do with other fragile gear such as lights and mask? I always wonder if that stuff is going to get busted because of the way they (airlines) throw the gear bag around.

I put my mask in my carryon too, along with computers and regs. Lights I take out the batteries and put both in checked luggage. I pad the lights with clothes or wetsuits. If they broke a light it would be annoying, but not as bothersome too me as something happening to the other things.

Those baggage handlers can get rough. Only way to reduce the likelyhood of broken items is tucking those fragile items carefully.

This doesn't mean you have to go and get a pile of expensive specialist bags. For things like photo strobes, lights, etc, I've wrapped in drycloths - or when space is limited - socks and undergarments - and placed them inside tupperwear containers. Also, I like to visit these cheap shops (there is a chain here in Canada called the Dollar Shop) and stock up on useful items like insulated lunch packs, cushioned cosmetic cases etc.
:D

Regs, computers, masks, cameras in roll-on bag for sure, but right - pad well. A dive buddy had her land camera lens broken in her roll-on when she had to gate check it on a Regional Jet. :11:

Thank u all and sorry about the bad spelling skills.

I think you should move from the scuba board to the clown's board>

Hey I checked them out but they said they were all full, apparently there was a big demand on their servers ever since you posted their link on ScubaBoard. :D

I pack ALL of my most important and expensive dive equipment in a carry on roller bag, even my BC is in it. Sorry about the kidding, but do have fun in Cancun.

I use the original plastic box the mask came in. Not only does it protect the mask from rough baggage handling, but also rough handling on the boat.

As far as lights, I've only brought my small UK light abroad (the only night dive I've done was on my home turf, for AOW). It's gotten through just fine.

Those baggage handlers are pretty rough on baggage. When I arrived in Maui and took my regular suitcase off the carousel, I noticed it wouldn't stand on end. I looked at it and noticed they broke off one of the legs :11: I'm not sure if it happened at LAX, Maui, or at Honolulu where I changed planes.
