I'm aware j's are still being used. I would only get 2 to 3 dives out of one...batteries were weak off the shelf in my experience. Dacor used to make a j to coin converter, that is where I got the idea. Basically it is a plug that is made to the shape of the j, with a round cutout in the center for the coin batteries. Copper sheet is used to make + and - contacts. Since I converted mine, seldom replace batteries.
 
One wont know until your at depth unfortunately?

Why would you buy this in the first place? Plenty of new ones out there for $200 and less this time of year.

actually you could pressure test it before exposing it to salt water. see this link in another thread: Recommendations for pressure testing an AI computer?

Use distilled water and even if it does leak you should do no damage.
