Unless you are cold or low on gas, there's no reason not to spend some time hanging out in the shallows at the end of a dive. In the Eastern Pacific, the shallow water is often full of fascinating jellies, and "deco" can be one of the most fun parts of the dive. I've also found very cool critters on mooring lines and buoys, and on resort dives where a boat is anchored in shallow water, one can often find things to look at while cruising around the anchor.
 
You do not even have to be shallow to do what TSandM says. Most of my dives are over deeper water but I have spent many happy hours hanging out near the anchor line or below the boat watching the stuff come swimming and drifing through before going up to the boat.
