Jolly Ranchers....take a whole bag. The other divers will be your friend. And lots of bottled water if none is available on the boat.

Talk to the Captain, DM, or any employee. They will tell you:

* What time to arrive.
* Where to park.
* If water and snacks are provided, and what those may be.
* Their procedure for loading, and grabbing tanks (assuming you don't bring you own)
* If there is a dry place for gear.
* If they have rinse buckets (for masks/Camera)
* How far the dive site is from the dock.

Many OPS bring fruit, juice, soda, and bottled water. Some just provide a cooler.

I use my reg bag as a dry bag. I keep my wallet, keys, towell, save-O'-dive kit, and other misc STUFF in my reg bag, and generally put it in the forward cabin, or on the ledge behind the front window.

Dive Bags generally go under the seat. Do NOT put anything under the seat that you expect to stay dry unless you have a dry bag.

They will breif you on the gear up procedure once on the boat. I generally just show up in sandals, swimsuit, and a tee-shirt. This time of year a coat maybe appropriate. Dress for the worst, you can always take off a layer.

I generally put on my wetsuit (half way) and boots prior to the 10 minute gear up notice. If they don't plan on doing a 10 minute notice, than ask them to.

Attach the reg and BCD to the tanks as soon as you can, and do a fill check. Some like to do this while still docked so if a fill is light, one can get another tank. This depends upon how much BT and depth your plan includes as a light fill may not matter in some cases.

I generally do a mask defog prior to the gear up warning.

When the 10 minute dive warning is given, get all your personal gear on FIRST, make sure everything is in reach, and then get into the BC. Once in the BC, you are basically stuck there until you are ready to enter the water. When the pool is open announcement is made, you will most likely do a giant stride into the water. Some prefer to enter backwards by just walking backward and then falling into the water.

I'm sure your instructor will tell you want they expect and when and what to do!!

Have Fun, and enjoy your certification dives!!

BTW, do NOT bring a Bananna onboard the boat... :monkeydan

The Kraken:
. . . but everyone doesn't have shapely legs and a butt like your's, Fish!!! :D

Oh, by the way, are you dancing "The Nutcracker" again this Christmas???
You were simply mah-velous last year! The best "Snow Princess" I've ever seen.

No... I'm dancing the "Blue Danube." It's always a big hit on tiny dive-boats in the middle of hellacious chop. :jester: :rocker: :icosm07:

I wear either boat shoes or sandals with a strap on the boat. There is no need to risk turning your ankle and ruining your dive.

slingshot:
Here's my newbie tip: if the tank valve is being held by a bungie, as they often are, undo the bungie before attaching your 1st stage. Not that I've ever done that!

Isn't the rule that everybody has to do that at least once?

Isn't the rule that everybody has to do that at least once?

Is that:

1: Once per lifetime

2: Once per season

3: Once per dive

This is a great thread. I'm getting ready for my first boat trip in about a month and a half, so this has answered many of my questions. But...

My biggest worry is getting my wetsuit on. It takes me about a half hour. Really. So, when should I start the struggle to get into it? -I don't want to hold everyone up (or miss the first dive while fighting with it).

FYI: I'll be renting, otherwise (depending on weather) I'd consider putting it halfway on before boarding.
