Well, I haven't gone into tech diving yet, but it is in my future.

Right now, I have ~120, a provisional in GUE-F, and at least 200 dives ahead of me before I consider tech training. For me, Rec Triox will be a nice intermediate step, that is going to happen somewhere close to 200 total dives, if I am ready.

I had about 550 dives before going into tec.

Not counting nitrox as tec, of course.....

I'm having a hard time knowing what tech is anymore. Wonder what it is in the OPs mind?

In that same vein.............I have 'technically' been diving for years. Practically I learned most after fundies....

It's so relative to the person, but I think if you are comfortable doing day and night dives in cold water/drysuit diving at 100' or greater you can begin down the path. Others waited until they had much more experience than that.

How many dives did you have before entering the realm of tech diving?
197 dives, including 53 drysuit, 21 to depths greater than 100 ft, and 4 in doubles. Having the DS experience was a real asset. I had enough dives below 100 ft (including 2 to 140 ft) to be comfortable, but I certainly didn't have extensive experience at depth. If I were to do it again, I would get more experience with my doubles before starting tech, just to have better control of bouyancy and trim.
