So, on the back of a recent discussion about removing a stuck tank valve, i have finally got it off. It took refilling to 50 bar, holding it up against a gutter with a car tyre on the other side, releasing the air quickly and a cheater bar in combo with a big hammer(Great suggestions here on this topic). During all this, the valve did come off, showing signs of excessive salt deposits, both on the o-ring, and inside the tank. Need to wash it more in the future perhaps. Anyway out came the dipstick, the burst disc, and on/off handle with spring. However i got stuck at the brass pressure seat for the on/off (the best way i can think to describe it).I can still turn it (albiet sticky), both ways, but cant find out how to remove it. Pulling at either end of the turning process dosnt seem to want to move. During this whole process the valve has taken some damage and will not be used again, but good for learning with. The tank is an AL80 Luxfer, valve a 230 bar rated Thermo, Viton o-ring.

After you removed the handle, there should have been a large nut called a bonnet nut that needs to be removed to free up the valve stem.

Sorry, i forgot to mention, the bonnet nut has come off to expose the valve stem. I can see it, it turns with a pair of needle nose pliers, but wont be removed!

the valve stem wont come out? am i understanding this right.

the valve stem should just pull out, if not, since you said you are not going to reuse the valve spray some stuff in there to loosen it up and pull it out.

the brass washer between the valve stem and the brass plug that opens the air flow might come out with the plug. or you might have to tap the valve on a piece or rubber or something else soft to get it to fall out, or use a pick.

if this dosent help, go ask this question in the equipment section in the tank, valves and bands forum

The valve stem is about an inch long screw with a large cylindrical head, it's not actually attached to anything. On the other hand, if what I think you mean is correct, then if the copper washer that holds the valve seat in place (a little green threaded plug on most thermos) is corroded sufficiently, it will be a b*tch to get the seat out by twiddling - brute force and ignorance, my good man, is the way to go. Copper is too soft to damage the valve itself, but it sounds like the rest of it is a write-off anyway.

Good luck!

C.
