I had purchased at set of ST1 prior to a dive trip to Kona. While on my 11th dive with KDC I also began to get a high pitched whistle. I was startled at first as I didn't know what was causing the noise and it wasn't whistling every time I inhaled. The regs kept delivering air I continued my dive. As we ascended the whistling stopped. During the SI I asked the DM if she had ever heard of these regs making this noise (she was using T2x) and she stated she hadn't. I decided I would continue using them as I only had 3 dives remaining in the trip. I did hear a diver make a comment to her dive buddy "she could hear the whales during the dive", LMAO. I returned the regs to my LDS and the Tech made the necessary repairs (piston replacement I think) and the regs were fine.
Just a comment about Atomics Aquatics customer service. I decided to trade up to a set of T2x prior to a trip to Grand Cayman and during my 3rd dive of the week with Ocean Frontiers the diaphragm failed on the 2nd stage and I was getting water in my mouth each time I inhaled. I cannalbilized the second stage from a spare set that was on the boat so I could complete my 2nd dive for the day. After we returned to shore and I returned to my condo I contacted AA through their website asking for an authorized dealer to make repairs. Within 45 minutes of my original inquiry I received a reply from Darcy who provided name and number of a retailer who could make the repair. I contacte the dealer but they refused to work on the regulator unless I provided proof of ownership and proof of warranty. I told them that I did not carry these types of records with me on a dive vacation. I asked them if they would contact AA directly to get this information and they statd they wouldn't as it would take days to receive a reply.
I then sent a note back to AA (Darcy) asking if they would contact the dealer and provide the necessary information ( I gave her the LDS who I purchased the regs from and the serial number) so I could get the repairs completed. Within 30 minutes Darcy replied that the Manager of the store had been contacted (she also provided his name) and to take the regulator to them for repairs. A trip into Georgetown and 15 minutes later the regulator was repaired and I was able to finish my vacation with my regs.
Sorry the post was so long, just wanted to provide positive feedback about a manufacture as we are quick to criticize when things go wrong.
The only whistling I've ever experienced was with a used M1 that I bought. Sent back to Atomic for service and she hadn't been whistlin' Dixie ever since. My B2 that I bought brand new never whistled. My regular dive buddy's B2 was whistling...except that when I tried it, there were no whistles. Go figure that out.
Anyway, the whistling of the first stage is a known issue; uncommon as it is, that can be fixed by either Atomic or a competent regulator tech.
The whistling can be an issue for any piston regulator. The noise is simply made as the air from the tank flows over the piston inside the first stage. It is not common with Atomic regulators, and we do everything in our power to prevent, but when the situation does occur we make sure to correct the situation appropriately. Thanks everyone for their input.
BTW...Happy Friday.
