So my next question is whether I can pop over to Utila from Roatan for the day and come back. We are in Roatan for 10 days and thought it would be nice to check out Utila one of the days if possible.

No not by using this flight as it leaves early on a Saturday morning from here to go to Roatan and then comes back in later on a Saturday afternoon.

If you just want to pop over for the day it is possible by chattering your own plane, there is a company in Roatan that does that, you have the choice either a small Cessna or an open top sea plane, which I have been on and is great fun.

The sea plane sounds fun! Where can I find out more information on that?

Thanks, I sent them an email. I hope to make it over to your neck of the woods.

That does sound interesting. I will check it out.

There is (apparently) a new resort going in on Utila, "Utopia Village." On their website they allege that there is now a regular, direct ferry running between Roatan and Utila - see their website, http://www.utopiadivevillage.com/moreinfo/, under "getting there" where it says the following:

"The more adventurous may want to use the ferry from La Cieba on the mainland or the new direct ferry route from Roatan to Utila taking only 45 minutes."

Is this just wishful thinking from a developer, or is this a real ferry going directly between the islands? At this point the resort apparently exists only on paper - their photo shows an empty field....maybe the ferry is also "planned for 2007" like the resort. Anybody know for sure?

There is no direct ferry service. A number of individuals who have boats can be hired to take people between the islands. Utila to Roatan is a much rougher and longer trip than Roatan to Utila due to the prevailing winds. Therefore if you are only planning on going one way try to make it Roatan to Utila, i.e. make Roatan the first week Utila the second.
