OK guys, here's the scenario: Two divers who need to be properly "bottom timer" -equipped and currently own only one computer between them, a Mosquito.

Criteria include:
1. No bells and whistles, we can already upload profiles
2. Clear easily seen display
3. Compact
4. Reasonably priced (need to buy two, which don't necessarily need to be the same)
5. Good for nearly every environment
6. Technical diving friendly

Also, do we buy separate watch/timers?

If you seriously think you will NEVER use the puter for anything other than a BT, than get a BT. Of course another option is one of the many nice dive watches that has a BT. They may not be as inexpensive as the Atmos I, and most do NOT have the big display.

A Viper works, Or a UWatec bottom timer.
But it depends on what you mean by reasonably priced.

A lot of DIR divers use Stingers (I believe the Vytec has the same feature), because they have a count up feature that can run while the timer is running (for timing stops), but it isn't a necessity, and they are damn expensive.

Whoops, thought it did.. two of the bottom timers then.. ;)

boomx5:

If I'm reading this correctly, because they want to *FORCE* a puter into Gauge mode so they can conform to DIR, they are downloading settings from a different computer that are likley NOT supported, or tested by Suunto??

This is SAFE??? That sounds like a perfectly great way to screw up an otherwise working computer to me. Take a tool that is designed, and tested, and download software designed for a different model that may NOT work correclty. Hey, it's DIR.

:banghead:

Maybe I am misreading this as I don't dive a Suunto, I hope so....

Wow....

As far as the computer issue goes, I will just say that, diving with a computer is NOT better and safer at calculating multilevel profiles while diving. I can say that, because I used to use one for that, and then I found a better way. So until you know the whole picture and have taken the training, you may want reconsider passing judgment on something you've only done a finite bit of research on.
