Even though I believe this belongs in another section, I'll post it here!! Are skydiving and DIR non-compatible? I have been wanting to try skydiving for a while now and yesterday I tried it for the first time. It took a cancelled dive trip to the Gulf of Mexico to free me up for a weekend. So as a potential DIR diver, should I be staying away from skydiving or do you think it is possible to apply a similar approach to this exhiliarating sport? The dangers are extreme, total preparation is a must. The only difference is that after a few jumps, you kind of lose your buddy. Thoughts?

Um, I'm not sure what this would have to do with DIR. BTW, the risks aren't that high anymore. Unless of course you're doing base jumping or crazy things.

The only non-DIR thing that I think of at the moment is that you don't always have immediate buddy contact.

I've tried skydiving, and it was quite a rush leaving the airplane. We went to 14000ft. in a "kingair" a twin engine built for skydiving with a roll up door on the port side. It was a tandem jump. I took my 19yr. old son on the same flight, I jumped before he did. Dropping through the sky and looking at all the puffy white clouds was amazing.
After awhile it didn't seem as if I was dropping any more, the feeling of height didn't registar. As I pulled the rip cord we dropped through a large cloud. Since this was my first jump I had another skydiver take a video of our jumps. Everyone in our family took a jump except my wife (dive buddy), so it was my oldest son and his wife, my youngest son and I. I would jump again, although I'm not sure I would like to my it a hobbie. I enjoy diving allot more.

Sue,
I think he was alluding to the gear configuration and team conventions.

Learn to route your rip cord (extra long of corse) and have your backup bungied just beneath your neck, minimalisation is a must so get rid of the fancy gear and wear a tracksuit and the most important thing, always plan your dives 'Go up, jump, count to 100, pull cord, brace for impact'. A three step course to DIR (sky)diving.
