I think he was hired to stir the pot and keep DIR at the top of the talk list. The question is who hired him? Choose one or add to the list...

Mike,

I try to stay out of threads that are obviously designed to be flames wars. As you know from my brief time on this list, I found out about this list from Roger Oakey during a class that I taught a few weeks back in New Mexico. My intention of signing up for this list is to answer any questions people have, not to sell classes. Frankly at this point we are booked for nearly all of 2003 and believe it or not we have people asking us about 2004 and we haven't even released our next programs so I can promise you that I'm not working in any conspiratorial objective with anyone to get classes..

It seems to me that this thread was all about taking a cheap shot at DIR, but nonetheless some still insist that DIR is to blame. I've tried to take a positive approach on this list, answer any and all questions and stay out of the flames, but it seems to me that some will suggest that it's the DIR guys no matter what the fact pattern..

I don't put you in that category as I've watched your posts and you are normally quit a bright guy and you appear to be a very conscintious [sp] instructor so I was surprised to see you use my name in this regard..The fact is that GUE is still a very, very small organization [ I think we have less then 30 instructors worldwide] and what happens more often then not is that people contact us about bringing a class to the local area, as you may know we have no problem traveling, and more often then not our classes are a direct result from a grassroots movement. Usually one or two divers in the local area who have no infastructure, no shop, no means of asking other locals if they want to also take the class absent the very scuba forums that they frequent.. For my part I'd prefer the trip reports speak for themselves. I'm very confident that we do a good job, and I see no problem with someone writing a post class trip report, and I encourage every student to write the good and the bad. If they think I did a bad job I ask them to be as candid about me as I was about them.

Just my thoughts..

but now I am interested. Where does the
$$$$$$go? Halcyon? Who????

1. Why do you need to know?

2. What difference does it make?

3. Shouldn't we wait until after you disclose your financials? Or do you ask the same information of other people just out of curiosity.

Stop wasting our time, reef-boy.:bonk:

MHK,
I opologize. The post was meant as a joke. The names used are divers on the list who are known dir advocates. I think (hope) the others know me well enough to recognize the post as jest. The thought that someone would take it seriously never entered my mind.

Mike K,
I can't speak for Mike F, but he seemed to be joking when he wrote that small list of DIR advocates, at least that's how I took it... I don't think he meant it maliciously...

Where does the $$$$$$ go? Halcyon?
"Where does it come from?" is maybe a better question. Where are they getting paid enough to do what they are doing?

I know that the piddly amount we paid for a DIRf several years ago didn't pay for Andrew's time much less for the others that helped with the class.

I know that the piddly amount Shane and I paid for Tech 1 didn't cover Andrew's time much less the others that helped... I wouldn't be surprised if MHK paid his own expenses to travel to the PNW to help with the classes.

The conclusion I have come to is that the GUE instructors are a bunch of dedicated folks who are not doing this to make $$$$$$. There are other better ways to make $$$$$$.

As for Halcyon...
Halcyon as a company is growing on the strength of its product line... that is a market thing.

I suspected that as well, Mike seems like a pretty straight shooter, and I guess I'm stressing a bit over year end and holidays so I could have been off a bit, if so I apologize to Mike in advance..

Accountants and year end close-outs make for some stressful times ;-)
