OK, after surving the 2500-mile banzai xmas roadtrip thru several states and some nasty snowstorms I had plenty of time to observe driving behavior and thought I'd offer the following comments.
As divers, we are all aware of safety-related issues and this topic permeates many of our discussions on the board. But, I wonder if we pay as much attention to safety while driving, which is statistically much more dangerous.
Here's my top two suggestions for safer driving:
Turn your lights ON (front and rear, regardless of weather conditions)...it makes your auto highly visible to other motorists. I was constantly amazed at the number of people driving in zero vis/low light conditions with their lights off. I suggested to one driver at a rest stop that he might want to use his lights, and his comment was that he could 'see' fine without them...kinda of missing the point...
Use the left lane for PASSING only. There were more near-accidents and incidents of road rage caused by people lingering in the left lane (some for hours)...overtake the car in front of you and return to the right lane as soon as it's feasible. And don't hesitate to speed up slightly to accomplish the move, nothing more nerve-wracking than someone unwilling to change their cruise control setting and taking 5 minutets to go by...
Feel free to add yours...
