I have been looking at the GUE gear configuration page and back several pages on this forum, and I cant find which is the more correct set up for DIR diving. On the GUE site it just lists the disadvantages of each, does this mean that either is fine? Im not meaning to start any kind of argument on the page, I want to know.

I prefer DIN (better reliability in my experience), but the few times I've traveled to warm water, only yoke valves have been available, so that's what I used (all easy, relatively shallow recreational dives). Here at home in SoCal, I have all my regs and cylinders set up as DIN, and just convert to yoke if I travel and DIN isn't available.

DIN. always
when an o-ring explodes, it's at 99.9999999999% on a yoke.
DIN regulators are less bulky. interesting when diving caves and wrecks.

sorry, not DIR...shouldn't have responded!

DIN, DIN and more DIN.

However, I have converters for when I travel and encounter yoke valves.

DIN looks more tech.....others on the boats are always impressed......hence I dive DIN whenever possible...:)

DIN vs. Yoke

Yoke valves have been around since the advent of SCUBA diving. Deutsche Industrie Norm (DIN) valves were intended to replace Yoke valves by offering a threaded design that was able to handle higher pressures. DIN valves also reduce problems by employing orifice o-rings. But, the DIN connection tube could come loose if a diver mistakenly twists the first stage to loosen the regulator-to-tank connection. For this reason, divers should only turn the hand wheel to remove the regulator.

my personal gear is now DIN (i converted my apeks xtx100) when i figured out the benefits as well as my tanks - not to mention that my rig is now going be a doubles setup

net/net - captured o-rings reduce the comman faliure mode of the yoke setup and allow conversion to yoke (with an adapter) if needed - you cannot go the other way around

I am Not GUE or a dyed in the wool DIR diver.... However, I have picked up great points from them and stop in Extreme when I am in High Springs. I also have arrows and cookies with that "H" on them. Needed them for a class and it was within walking distance from "Great Outdoors". ;) DIN is my choice because I like the security of the trapped O-ring. But, I also dive Yoke when diving recreationally. I also always carry 2 yoke adapters when I travel.

Same as Deepair...Go Din, carry yoke adapter...Hopefully 300 Bar Din will eventually become standard globally.....
