I thought I would be a good little diver and get my regs serviced before a fairly major trip. Took 2 Scubapro Mk20's into my LDS who sent them off.

4 days later they come back - we can't service regs with DIN fittings. What?! Only Scubapro will do that in Japan for the tidy sum of $150 per set plus parts.......

I am not the only one that thinks this is crazy - the LDS has recomened next time I go to the US or UK get it done there.

To the question - Are they more complicated to service? I would have though easier.... I also have 2 Mk20 "A" clamp regs - if I swapped the kits round would I miss something on the servicing?

Thing is I know one of the DIN first stages has done a lot of ocean dives since the last service about 15 months ago and I am going somewhere very remote - no dive shops! - so I want to make sure it all works....

Thanks for any advice
Jonathan

:whoa: What?! Someone is clueless. When do you need them by? Can you express them to states and get them back in time?

Jonathan they are feeding you a line of crap!!!! As we all know the only differance is the way the reg attaches to the tank...It's all the same service kit i have all the scubapro tools and have attended the seminars for SCUBAPRO'S and own Mark 20's myself it's no problem send them to Canada I'll fix em!!!:D

I thought Lost Yooper was going to have a heart attack after he heard that one....;)

I thought that sounded "fishy" , I'm no tech but I'd have known better. I wonder when shimano will start making regs???

I have not worked on your type of regs... BUT... the DIN fitting and the yoke fitting are usually interchangeable on most first stages. As the shop may have a flow bench that will not accept DIN fittings, they may have genuine concerns over testing your unit. SOOOOOOOO, switch the fittings, not the reg. Just be sure that the fittings DO have the same thread pitch and diamater that fits into the first stage. When you get your regs back, just swap the fittings back and you are done.

Of course the BEST solution would be to find an LDS that will service them the way they are. I am sure that there are plenty to do it, but a shop does not want to lose you as a customer. It looks like they just might have lost you ayway.

The LDS was as surprised as all of us. The owner used to do his own servicing but no longer has the space for the workbench so uses another agent.

The thing is that DIN has not made it here to Japan yet - not even at Scubapro, you simply can't buy them. Due to local laws and regulations hardly anyone here owns tanks so they are nearly all tanks that can not take DIN. In fact to dive with DIN here the only person I have found that can get hold of the tanks is the LDS I use as the owner is the IANTD training rep out here.

Also I suspect it is not on the service technicians procedures sheet out here and they've necer seen one before. If it ain't on the sheet they can't do it - fairly common practice even though to you and me it may seem obvious.....

He's lucky though - he won't lose me as it was hard enough in the first place finding a good technical instructor that spoke English out here....

Thanks for the input
Jonathan

BTW Normal Servicing is $90 at the current exchange rate....
