I am presently using a Scubapro MK20 first stage - yoke - together with a S600 second stage and a R190 octopus. For increased security on deeper dives I will buy another first stage (and maybe a second stage as well). Should I go for a DIN or yoke-solution? Which are the pros and cons???

Regards

Johan

I prefer 300BAR DIN on my first stages
the main reason is the trapped ORing there is far less chance of the Oring extruding from the DIN than a yoke.

Other than that they look much nicer and all my tanks have always been DIN

The downside is if you need to ever hire tanks or are going on a trip you need to swap the DIN fitting on the first stage to Yoke, this takes me all of 5mins and is not really a big deal

Get the DIN first stage and a DIN to Yoke adapter for the occassional times when you only have yoke bottles available.

High pressure DIN regs can be used on HP DIN valves, LP DIN valves, and yoke valves [with a converter]. So they cover all the bases. DIN also fits closer to the valve and gives you a little more headroom.

The cost of converting a Yoke over to DIN generally involves labor charges from your LDS, and therefore is actually more expensive than buying the DIN to Yoke converter, which you may need to buy anyway so you can use yoke tanks after the conversion.

I would say that if you have any thought to have a high pressure tank in the future, or any DIN tank for that matter; go with DIN from the start.

Johan,

You don't need to buy another first stage. You should be able to have your LDS convert your present first stage to DIN without any performance issues. Then you already own the Yoke attachment and go go back to it at any time. Having a DIN to Yoke converter will prevent any intervention by your LDS.

Thank you for your answers so far! It seems obvious that I should go for a DIN first stage and then use a DIN-Yoke converter when needed.

Just to explain my decision as regards buying another first stage: the reason that I will buy another first stage is not that I want to change my MK20, which I am really happy with. The reason is increased security on deep dives, i e I will use two first stages when I dive.

Johan

Don't get a converter, Converters stick out way to far into the back of your head, I hate the things, oh yes if you want one PM me I have two and never use them.
The Mk20 Yoke kit will cost you about the same as a good converter, you can swap between DIN and yoke in about 10 mins with a couple of Alan keys and an adjustable wrench.

I'll take your adapters if you don't want em!
