It's worse than that: the transition period ended in November 2008 and the new EN 144-3 (M26) standard is in full swing.

But a standard is not law: look at the "old" DIN connector that's been around a long time; you can still dive your merry way with a yoke connector.

The French federation published a lengthy letter basically stating it's not its problem. But still, if it can make you feel better, sign the online petition. There's an English translation here.

In summary, since it's a confusing topic:

1. M25x2 is tank neck thread and not related to the topic oif this thread

2. G5/8 is the 'standard' DIN fitting, just to make it even more confusing it is sometimes (incorrectly) referred to as M25

3. M26x2 is the 2008? EU 'nitrox' standard DIN fitting (see below) which is designed to stop you using non-nitrox compatible regs with nitrox aka overregulation of the industry by govt

Everyone totally confused now? Good

On second thought, we really NEED to kick the butts of those bureaucrats in Brussels, else they might come up with something worse.

Signing the petition seems to be a good place to start; any other idea?
