the threaded attachment refers to the physical size of the opening that an add-on lens will screw into. You have to match the lens to the camera... sometimes step-up or step-down adapters are needed.

The attached lens will have a magnification associated with it (a wide angle lens will have a .56x or similiar rating, while a zoom attachement will be a 2X, 3X, etc.)
 
I'm a newbie diver, but have had some experience in the film-digital-SLR world.

I have a Canon D60 SLR which now takes all the photos on my website (somewherewest.com). I note that there is an underwater case for the D60. The Nikon D100 is also an excellent SLR.
