We need to be able to weigh the luggage before we leave home and before we leave our vacation destination to return home.

Go to a flea market. For no more than $15 pick from one of the many spring loaded scales that were used for weighing produce. They are about the size of a eyeglass case and have two hooks, one on each end. Hang it from a basement rafter (if you're a Chicagoan) or from the overhead track of the garage door.

You can easily calibrate it with 1 gallon jugs of water in a duffel bag.

Works like a champ. Unless.... like I said... the airlines change the rules in mid flight.
 
After seeing this thread, I ordered one. I just got it today, and it's very convenient! I even used it to weigh one of my cats :P Just wanted to give it another thumbs up.
