Travelers might be interested in this inexpensive (about $26), easy-to-use, hand-held digital scale that weighs in pounds or kilograms with one tenth unit resolution. See HERE. I just got one. I question some of the design and manufacturing decisions (e.g., the handle is more of a bother than a help; it comes off easily, so I am keeping it off), but it seems to perform as advertised.

I got this this travel scale awhile back. About $10. It's a little awkward, really takes 2 people to lift the thing and read it for a big bag, but gets the job done.

My wife and I were chuckling as we read your post since we ordered the exact same scale yesterday.

We chose that model since it does not require two people to operate it effectively.

What's wrong with an ordinary bathroom scale?

If it's too large to fit, just weigh yourself, note the weight, then check it again when you're holding the particular piece of luggage.

Bathroom scales aren't easy for all of us if you're short and female - can't see over the bag to the weight readout.

I've used this scale from Magellans for a couple years and it's saved me from doing the dreaded airport shuffle of clothes and such: Magellans. Good design, light and easy to take with on trip.

However, it would be nice to have a luggage scale that held the weight indication until you put it down - would save me having to do it in front of a mirror!

Bathroom scale is little hard to pack, the idea of the travel scale is to use it when you're away. I don't pack the same when I come back, and then there's that water weight...

When you are returning from some exotic place and suddenly the gear that weighed 45 lbs at home now weighs 55 lbs, you can whip out the small scale (digital or analog) right then and there to either dispute the weight at the counter or re-adjust the gear into other bags. Happened to us in Cozumel. Has happened to friends who had to pay $75 extra for "overweight" luggage that was not overweight.

I had that happen in London on the way back from the red Sea.

One bag weighed +2 lbs over the limit, the other was -15. I told them I would re-sort some of the stuff, but... "Oh no sir- once it's past the counter on these scales you're no longer allowed to touch the bags. TSA rules, you understand :no". Rubbing in the fact (?) that these were US mandated rules.

This was the same airline that allowed me 70# each upon leaving the US, but when I returned through Gatwick they zapped me for being over 50#. Thanks, C:mooner:NTINENTAL.

Bathroom scales don't pack very well and add a lot of weight. We need to be able to weigh the luggage before we leave home and before we leave our vacation destination to return home.
